IMA is extremely pained at an attempt to defame and demoralize the medical profession by the well known cine celebrity, Mr. Aamir Khan through his so-called “entertaining and socially awakening” programme “Satyamev Jayate” telecast on Sunday 27-5-2012 on Star TV channel.
At a Press Conference organized at New Delhi today to present the Doctors' perspective on the episode of Mr.Aamir Khan's Programme "Satyamev Jayate" on Healthcare, Dr. D.R.Rai, Hony. Secretary General, IMA said that this episode was extremely demeaning for the world’s most respected professionals - the medical doctors. The whole of the doctors’ community has been left demoralized by the degrading and humiliating portrayal of the profession in the above episode.
The other medical luminaries present on the occasion included Dr. V.K.Narang, Hony. Fin. Secy., IMA, Dr. R.N.Tandon, Hony.Jt.Secy., IMA, Dr. Narender Saini, Hony. Jt. Secy., IMA AMS, Dr. Harish Gupta, President, Delhi Medical Association (DMA), Dr.V.K.Kohli, Hony. Secretary, DMA, Dr. K.K. Aggarwal, President, Heart Care Foundation of India, Dr.Harsh Mahajan of Mahajan Imaging Centre, Dr.Ashok Grover, Chairman, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and Dr.Sunil Dargar, President Practicing Pathologists’ Association.
They informed the media that the doctors spend years together studying and practicing medicine and proving to be a life giver for thousands and thousands of patients giving them a new lease of life through medical treatment and procedures.
Most of them were of the view that Mr. Khan wanted to create ruffled features and increasing his show’s TRP instead of portraying both sides of the coin.
It would have been in the best interest of general masses, if Mr.Aamir Khan had invited IMA to represent the medical profession. We would have been in a much better position to clear the air over the issue.
The dignitaries present were of the view that not much research and ground work had gone into the preparation of the episode. Medical profession which deals with health which is one of the most intricate aspects of our lives and cannot be judged by non medicos.
Every profession has its dark horses. Even the profession, to which Mr. Aamir Khan belongs, is in the news every now and then due to some ill practices in their industry. But it can safely be claimed that the white sheep always outnumber the black ones in every field.
It was extremely wrong on the part of a responsible citizen of the country and a public figure like Mr. aamir Khan whom most of the citizens of the country might even consider as their role model, to put the rotten eggs over the good ones.
As all of us are aware that the bad element leaves a longer lasting mark compared to the good ones and as the percentage of the good over evil is much higher, more time should have been allotted to the good aspect of the professionals.
Inviting the Association would have helped the budding doctors viewing the episode to decide their role model and the general masses not to form a bad picture of the doctors.
While the medical profession is committed to alleviate the pain and suffering of the general masses through medical treatment and care, it also considers it as its prime responsibility to thwart any attempt to tarnish the image of the medical profession. We want to clarify on each and every misinterpretation broadcast in the above episode.
We reiterate our concern and state that Mr. Aamir Khan should apologise publically for portraying one sided story which is not in the right spirit of Ethics of constructive Journalism, especially while bringing to the notice of the general masses, some cases of rare occurrences as regular phenomenon or practice.
Therefore, you being committed for depicting the correct picture to the general public, are requested to kindly give widest possible coverage to this aspect of the issue and also arrange a show on the Electronic Media in this regard by inviting IMA along with top personalities of the medical profession immediately and show it at prime time after due publicity.
